What is Science2003?
Science2003: Improving the Human Condition is the University of Pittsburgh's third annual broad-based regional celebration of local science and technology. It is scheduled for September 24-26 on Pitt's Oakland campus.

What is the purpose of this event?
We want to showcase the region's academic strengths in science, engineering, medicine, and computation and highlight some of the incredible research going on in these areas. We also want to demonstrate how this research can be a catalyst for regional economic development; foster collaboration among academic and industrial scientists; and promote the idea to the public that science can be interesting, exciting, and fun.

What is planned for Science2003?
Highlights will include symposium sessions on "hot" research topics; keynote lectures by some of America's premier scientists; a showcase of new technology available for licensing; speakers from local biotech and engineering firms; a trade show of laboratory and scientific products and services; networking opportunities, social events, and more.

Who is the target audience for Science2003?
All Science2003 events are free and open to the public, but we especially promote them to faculty, students, postdoctoral fellows, and research associates from local colleges and universities; representatives of pharmaceutical, biotechnology, information technology, scientific equipment, and related industries; leaders in economic development and philanthropy; representatives of law firms, financial firms, and venture capitalists; and secondary school science teachers.

How large an audience does Science2003 reach?
Last year, nearly 1,000 people attended some part of the three-day event. A total of 92 companies and organizations were represented either as sponsors or exhibitors or by employees who participated in or attended some part of the program. A sell-out group of 75 businesses and organizations exhibited at the trade show. Fifty-one speakers participated in the symposium, including 30 University of Pittsburgh faculty, eight Carnegie Mellon University faculty, and 13 representatives of local biotech and support services companies. One hundred twenty-six posters were presented in the poster sessions. Even more people are expected this year.

Who are some typical sponsors?
Last year's top-level sponsors included the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse, Richard King Mellon Foundation, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Alcoa Foundation, Cambrex, PPG Foundation, and Technical Sales Association. In all, there were 46 sponsors from a broad base of local biotech companies, foundations, and service organizations.

What types of non-University people attend this event?
Among the job titles held by various corporate participants last year were chief executive officer, chief operating officer, attorney, director of research operations, senior vice president of business development, technology director, and patent agent.
